Dolls' Houses Past & Present

About Me

My name is Christine, and am married with two children.  I absolutely adore old dolls houses, as they are so full of character. I am looking for some help and advice with my quickly growing collection.  My recent interest was sparked when I decided to clean up this wonderful dolls house that my father made for me in the 1960's(profile pic).  It is loosely based on illistrationsof a book that I had of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  I am now hooked!!!! as I have in two years become the proud owner of 4 Triang houses, a Dolly Mixture? and a large house which was too much of a bargain to miss on ebay, even though I had to travel over 200 miles to collect.  So I am looking for inspiration and ideas to complete all these

Hi Chris, yes cats vary enormously in what they like to get into. I guess small houses attract due to the potential for hiding or searching out small prey and for hiding in. As for swiping, it must be endless fun to try out those fists full of miniature sabres, or climb on a house and leap off! I just keep my Siamese out of the room where I keep the fragile stuff and have only the most robust ones in where she patrols, but often have to work around her (literally!) as she loves to get in my way when I'm fixing the insides. As I love her to bits I always have to stop hat I am doing and fuss her...cats are lovely companions!

My Siamese is an indoor cat and has to find extra stimulation and satisfaction scaling dolls house roofs (I put a piece of non slip carpet stuff on top followed by a piece of denim) and squeezing into the rooms (which I have to leave empty in my workroom, as she shares this with me. She is not allowed in my store area, or with the older ones in the dining room.
Cats do seem to pick up when to be careful around vulnerable stuff and learn from our protective attitudes. Compromise and protect!

I have another little house. That is nearly done but I can't load photos on here from my iPad for some reason! I'll have to resurrect the laptop and see what I can do!

I only just noticed your query about Greenhill, or maybe I forgot!!! Since we moved last year I have had no chance to work on it at all but I will do an album as soon as it is done! Sorry you have had a long wait!

Hi Chris
I just saw your reply to my question about home made houses made on feb 9th. Sorry I didn't respond before.
Are there any photos of your little 3 Bears house? I can't find any on the photo album page.
My Dad made my first house from scratch tooo -sadly, it's no longer in the family. I always thought I'd only be drawn to the Triang style houses of the 40s/50s but am now quite obsessed with those made, more from love than for profit, by family or friends of their little recipients.
Would love to see inside your house.

Hi Chris, I have just arrived home from Scotland and itching to get back to my houses. I am afraid to say that I have done zero work on Green Hill. I was busy with my sale and then I have built a dolls house from a kit as a gift for my sister in law (my one and only modern house!) as I wanted to take it when we went to Scotland. Once I get started I'll post more pics on the album!

Hi Chris, I didn't remove the windows and it was difficult to paint. I found out afterwards that they could have been removed. It would have made the job so much easier. Having said that my husband had to take the windows out to show me how it could have been done as I was worried that they would get damaged. If I was going to do another house, I would remove them before painting.
