About Me

I'm a university lecturer in London and live in Oxford. I'm in the process of restoring a Handicraft fretwork house c.1919 with original floor and wallpapers under a 1960s revamp and a few weeks ago acquired at a bargain price a 4 room Silber and Fleming type box back complete with contents and dolls. The interior of the front has remnants of old newspaper (The Northern Echo) where the original glass fitted and I found a date of December 1883 on one of the scraps, so I'm assuming the house dates from around then, as it also fits with the style of some of the furniture and dolls. It needs a lot of restoration, which I'm undertaking very gingerly, so am delighted to have discovered this forum, as I will need plenty of advice.

You're very welcome, Mike. They are great, aren't they, though actually a little claustrophobic when seen 'in the flesh', as they line a basement room in the Institute. In some ways the photos do them better justice.

Just had to thank you Susanne for introducing me to 'The Thorne Rooms'. What I love about this hobby is the places it takes the mind to and this place is special.........Thank you.

Hi, the new house posted is actually a G & J Lines dating to about 1915 to 1919 approx. i ahven't realy looked into it yet. I am about to write a book on G & J Lines plus box backs and would love a photos of the inside as well as the outside. It has been over painted, but there are not huge numbers of these houses available. Rebecca has put an appeal under forum on my behalf. Man thanks, Marion Osborne

Never mind, you are only as old as you feel and this hobby certainly keeps you young.
You are still very welcome and your projects sound really interesting.

Thanks for the welcome - not sure how that age got there - it's not mine by quite a long way!
