I was surprised to learn that these houses had doorbells.

My Stockbroker had a doorbell, added no doubt when it was wired for lights.

A lot of the FAO Schwarz mystery houses have these doorbells. All of my research places the houses between 1890 and 1905, with the famous FAO catalog of 1897 showing them for sale ($33...a fortune then!). It seems unlikely that they were electrical at that time (maybe mechanical bells?) and likely that the bell was added later, but its odd that so many of the known ones have the exact same doorbell located in the same spot. But maybe that is just what was available when everyone electrified theirs? If anyone knows, do share. I am very curious!
