If the top step is level with the landing, the gap goes, but the banister is some distance away from the top balustrade.

That's the problem, if it's snug there's a gap big enough for a Grecon to fall through! I think it needs a wedge to keep it in place, and maybe the bottom flight needs a bit of sanding. It's certainly not the best staircase I own!

The last step is created by the thickness of the floor/ ceiling e.g. the steps are fixed below the floor thickness. if you do that , it should work. Go with the notch being snug with the floor - there is a bit of gap with mine but that's how it works.

At first I thought it had warp a bit but the gaps are quite large.
