The Queen, who was enjoying a holiday at one of her estates in the North,
...was tending her pigeons on the royal allotment when there was a sharp knock. "Shush, you will upset One's birds," she said, coming quickly to the door of the cree to find Dexter 'Beefy' Shorthorn standing there.

Great story Zoe, I wouldn't go near pigeons in that outfit.

The real Queen keeps racing pigeons in the Royal pigeon loft on her Sandringham estate, though I don't think she's as hands-on as my Queenie. My grandad kept pigeons on his allotment and when I was a girl I loved to spend time with him and the birds. It largely involved sitting very still and keeping very quiet as we waited for them to land but I still loved it. He told me that the Queen kept pigeons but he also said she was a relative and called her "our Lizzie" so I didn't believe any of it. Later, I saw on 'Coronation Street' that Jack Duckworth was very proud of the fact that the Queen also kept pigeons and oddly, his wife Vera was convinced she was related to the Queen too, which makes me wonder if it was a common 'in joke' amongst working class pigeon keepers.

What a pleasantly plebeian hobby for a queen!
