My real house built in 1903 has a stained banister rail but the stairs and posts are white.

That could be the case with mine hope to find out soon

do you mean the stairs that wood look good its the side bits and posts that need striping

Yes Debs, I meant the stairs. Maybe the sides could stay white or cream? Where we live there are lots of older houses with a mixture of stained and painted wood on the stairs and it looks very nice.

How about just cleaning and waxing them? That could look good too and might work with the hand rails?

It doesn't look as if it had spindles originally fro your photos, Debs. If you add spindles you will be updating/renovating the house which is different to restoring it. I'm not saying that's the wrong thing to do, and I hope you don't mind me pointing this out, but it's probably worth being clear in your mind where you're going with it from the start as some things aren't easily reversible and it is a lovely old house. Or maybe you have seen something to indicate it did have spindles?

as i have 2 of the original banister rails i can see that there has been spindles due to little holes drilled on the underside.i don't know if they were turned or plain .
The dolls house is meant to be modeled on his own town house but in saying that its an odd place for the stairs ?i do know what you mean about restoring or renovating .I thought it was in such a state that i could only improve it but as i peel back the layers it feels like a lot of responsibility to do it justice and get it right.

Agree with Edel, waxing can look really good., or painting brown as Patty suggests.

it definitely worth thinking about

i like the effect without spindles, its such a complex design, think spindles might spoil it!

You could paint them brown, a similar shade to the hand rails and then varnish over with clear satin or matt. I have done this and it looks ok. sometimes you have to make a few decisions to make your task a bit easier. the most important thing is to do a neat job.
