Zoe H - Bernard Buys a Car

Thirty minutes later, Bernard was leaving with his new motor - what a man of means he felt now and Rita was going to be so proud of him, he'd beaten Martin down by almost £2.

Martin waved him off, maintaining his business-like demeanour until Bernard had disappeared out of sight...

In the 60s I had an old 3Ltr engine Coupe Rover and £6 on 4 star petrol would fill the tank, can't remember the capacity of the petrol tank though.

And now we know who he has to thank for that don't we?! LOL

I was thinking about the relative values whenIi was ln bed , I gave Olivia £5.00 last week & I was thinking that is about the equivalent of 10/- when I was a girl. my Uncle used to give me half a crown but now & then it would be 10/-, riches!

On the basis that prices double roughly every 10 years, I think £5 may be closer to half-a crown! I used to get 2/6 from my great-uncle in 1965 - and that equates to £4 today.

I think the valet service may be a trifle expensive - petrol was around 4/6 a gallon in the late 50s and wages were about 3/6 an hour and actually I don't think that garages offered that service - I think that your private chauffeur did it if you were that sort of rich!

My dad used to get his Ford Anglia valeted when it went for a service, but that was in 1964.

...I think we're in the 50s and the car ticket price of £275 is hopefully somewhere in the ballpark...

The ticket price was actually £375, silly me!

I wonder if Martin came up with the idea then and we have just discovered the true origins of car valeting?! I expect Ophelia was happy to pay the 8/6 rather than have the hassle of trying to remove all of Smokey's dog hairs from the upholstery.

There's a lot of guesswork going on with the pricing in this tale. I think we're in the 50s and the car ticket price of £275 is hopefully somewhere in the ballpark but I'm not sure. A £2 discount has to be a bit poor though - I think it's the equivalent of getting £100 off a car worth £13750. (No idea if the valet service is reasonably priced at 8/6 either - anything less than £s in old money is Greek to me.)
