Roof off to show the electrics. There are bulbs in each room - not working.

What voltage is the transformer ? It should say on it. My Edwardian house had these chunky light fittings but no transformer having previously had a battery.I connected it up to a 6volt transformer and replaced the bulbs.I had to replace a couple of light fittings but it didn't take much to get it going.
If you really can't get them working then I would rewire it rather than trying to get in to the original wiring.
If the transformer doesn't work then you could change it easily enough.Sue Ryder shops sell transformers for £7.99 which do a lot of lights, but you have to ask as they keep them in the back due to people stealing them!
I wish I lived nearer,I would come and have a go!!!!
