Zoe H - Bernard Buys a Car https://www.dollshousespastandpresent.com/apps/photos/ Zoe H - Bernard Buys a Car Now a fully-qualified solicitor, Bernard has decided the time has come to buy a car. With a determined stride, he pops down the to local garage saleroom, owned by his old school chum, Martin. https://www.dollshousespastandpresent.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=199528155 199528155 He peers in through the window, 'Ah yes, there it is, a tad pricy but just the thing for the family...' he thinks. '...and what luck, Martin doesn't look too busy either.' https://www.dollshousespastandpresent.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=199528156 199528156 Spotting Bernard, Martin leaps from his chair and hurries out to greet him. "Bernard my good man, how the devil are you?!" he exclaims warmly. "Oh very well, Martin thank you and you? How's the new business going? I must say the 'Empire' looks very impressive!" Bernard has some hard bargaining to do, not something he's terribly at ease with, but Rita has given him tips and the first one was 'Butter the salesman up - make him like you.' Of course, everyone who knows Bernard likes him anyway but being a modest and unassuming man he isn't aware of this. https://www.dollshousespastandpresent.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=199528157 199528157 "Oh the 'Empire' yes, it's doing marvellously. Sales of the old motors going well..." he blags, "...and we have a new valeting service up and running now as you can see." Bernard recognises his Aunt Ophelia's car being valeted by Martin's assistant. "That's Felix-" says Martin, "-wounded in the war, only has one foot you know, does a wonderful job in any case - can't spell for toffee though." he laughs eying Felix's hastily-drawn sign. "Anyway, Bernard, what can I do for you on this fine morning?" https://www.dollshousespastandpresent.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=199528380 199528380 Bernard explains that he's interested in the car Bernard has in the showroom. "Ah Bernard, you are clearly a man of taste and discernment as well as practicality." Buttering up the client was evidently the first rule of car-salesmanship too. Martin proceeded to show Bernard the car which he assured him would provide ample space for himself and his wife, his three girls AND the two dogs. Bearing in mind Rita's advice, Bernard tried not to look TOO keen, though it did indeed seem like the ideal vehicle for his purposes and his heart was racing. https://www.dollshousespastandpresent.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=199528381 199528381 Having agreed that the car was eminently suitable, the two men sat down to begin their negotiations. "The price is a little higher than I was hoping to pay, Martin," said Bernard bravely, "...is there anything you could do there to bring it down?" he said, trying his best to disguise the tremor in his voice. "Oh now you're asking, Bernard, these cars are selling like hot cakes at the moment, I could sell that one three times over this week." said Martin bullishly. It was a specious argument thought Bernard eying the sales chart on the wall - either sales were non-existent or Martin had simply been too busy to fill in his chart. Bernard pressed on, hearing Rita's voice in his head - why hadn't he brought her with him? he thought. "Even so, Martin, there must be some give in there somewhere..." https://www.dollshousespastandpresent.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=199528382 199528382 Before too long a mutually acceptable deal was struck and the two old chums shook hands. Having made prior arrangements with his bank, Bernard took out his cheque book and paid in full. https://www.dollshousespastandpresent.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=199529140 199529140 Thirty minutes later, Bernard was leaving with his new motor - what a man of means he felt now and Rita was going to be so proud of him, he'd beaten Martin down by almost 2. Martin waved him off, maintaining his business-like demeanour until Bernard had disappeared out of sight... https://www.dollshousespastandpresent.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=199529141 199529141 ...at which point he raced back into the showroom, grabbed his red pen and brought his sales chart bang up-to-date with great excitement. Perhaps he would be able to put food on the table next week after all. https://www.dollshousespastandpresent.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=199529142 199529142 Oblivious to Martin's jubilation next door, Felix decides it's time to make himself at home in the garage by hanging a picture of his favourite pin-up. He sneaked the large-fold out picture from the centrefold of one of his wife's glossy magazines that morning. "Phewee!" he whistles under his breath, 'She's all woman that one - that Chutney chap she just married is one lucky fellow.' he thinks wistfully. https://www.dollshousespastandpresent.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=199536407 199536407
