Time Capsules: Museums and websites with 1:1 rooms & houses

Real rooms and houses which preserve a particular era.

 

The National Trust property in Birmingham in the UK, the Birmingham Back to Backs is the only remaining example in the country of back to back houses and shops, built around a communal courtyard in the centre. They have been restored to show how they would have been at different periods - 1840s, 1870s, and the sweet shop 1940s.

Member Lizzie has blogged about her visit there, including an additional exhibition of wallpapers showing how the conservators had discovered over 140 different examples when the houses were restored.

 

Mr Straw's House: A semi-detached house in Worksop, Nottinghamshire which belonged to a grocer, with original interior decorations from 1923.

Norsk Folkemuseum - Norway's largest museum of cultural history featuring the world's oldest open air museum and large indoor collections.The open air museum has more than 160 houses, mills, farm buildings, a 12th century church and 1970s apartment. See the website for location and opening hours.

A Victorian kitchen at Cefn Park, near Wrexham, North Wales. 

In a private house, this kitchen is not open to the public. The article shows photos of the house, kitchen ranges, tables, utensils, servants' bells, etc.

 

A Paris apartment in the 9th arrondissement, which was locked and left by its owner in 1939, and only opened after her death. The link goes to a newspaper article, which shows the contents of the apartment before its sale: furnishings, art and objets of the early decades of the 20th century.

 

A terrace house in Sydney, Australia, built in the late 19th or early 20th century, which was purchased in 1960 and largely closed up in 1974. It retained its 1960s decor until its recent sale.
